While on a quick, early morning scouting survey for Wednesday's Long Pine Key CBC, I located a Brown-crested Flycatcher. It was squabbling with a Great Crested so comparison of the two species was easy. As well as the somewhat heftier dark bill, the Brown-crested's light throat and upper breast blend into its yellow lower breast and belly. This particular Great Crested is an intense lemon yellow with sharp demarcation between yellow and gray. The Brown-crested periodically vocalized with single strong "whit" calls.
Directions: After entering ENP, turn-off for Royal Palm and drive .8 miles, then turn right toward the research centers. Drive .4 miles, reaching the eastern terminus of Research Road. Continue toward Hidden Lake on the graded road for ~120-150 yards. The flycatcher worked both sides of the road. Also in the immediate vicinity was a dull Magnolia Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, White-eyed Vireo and 2 screaming Red-shouldered Hawks.
The White-tailed Kite was hunting at its usual location along the N-S stretch of Research Road.
