I would like to thank Wendy Leonard and Pat Owen for their help doing the 2 lakes & adjoining canals bird count. We put in around 7:30 at the upper end of Buttonwood Canal, paddled north into Coot Bay, then headed west until we picked up the creek going to Mud Lake. We caught up with the Bear Lake Trail team as they were making it to the end of their trail just as we were about to enter Bear Lake. We traveled into each lake along the north shores and returned going along the south & east shores. This was favorable as the winds picked up in Bear Lake to about 15 knots and made the lee shores choppy. More birds were observed along the protected south and east shores of the lakes. The canals connecting the lakes were hard to observe due to our preoccupation of working through the narrow and overgrown canals. The birds pretty much had to be highly visible and right by the shore. Once in the lakes, we had more time as we worked the shores.
We ended our Bird Count where we started at 3:50 and traveled a total of 12.46 miles. A list of the birds we saw are as follows:
